How much is your home worth? Several sites track sales data and pricing
trends to estimate current market values.
To try them out, we asked four sites to appraise the Clintons' house
(15 Old House Lane, Chappaqua, NY 10514), which they bought for $1.7
million in November 1999. The results varied widely:
domania.com (Web site): $2,572,684.
HomeAdvisor (Web site): $807,988 to $1,194,109.
HomeGain.com (Web site): $680,273 to $782,680.
RealEstate.Yahoo.com (Web site): $461,000 and $1,912,687.
The domania.com estimate and the higher Yahoo! estimate are based on
plugging in the price the house sold for; the price is then adjusted
according to how neighboring houses' prices have changed in the intervening
time. Checks on other houses convinced us that past sales prices are reported
accurately, but current-values estimates vary widely.
