Domania, Inc. Dominates Deed Data

BOSTON, MA, March 26, 2001 — Domania, the Boston-based national leader in home sales data and mortgage services, today announced a major data acquisition, which provides highly accurate data in 103 counties across 23 states, including Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Michigan, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and more. Domania, www.domania.com, was the first company to offer consumers access to home sales prices, called "comps."

Domania provides comps for 565 counties comprising 80% of the U.S. population including 84% of the top metropolitan areas in the U.S. Domania covers all metro areas with greater than 500,000 people, except in Texas, a non-disclosure state. Overall, Domania offers consumers an immense 26 million home sale records.

popular and easy to use real estate site that offers comps. Often called "Best of Breed" on the Internet, Newsday called Domania's home price check "an invaluable tool." Money Magazine named Domania one of the top financial web sites and called their comps search engine "a great reference."

Domania's nearest competitor claims to cover all 50 states, and 2,073 counties. This misleading stat counts spotty coverage of a few, select counties within state as "full state" coverage. Also misleading is the same competitor's claim to offer "more than 4,000,000 records," a figure which covers only a fraction of US sales for a single year! Domania easily trumps this with over five years of sales history.

"This data acquisition confirms Domania's leadership position in the real estate and mortgage industries," said Steve Kropper, CEO of Domania. "Domania recognized early on that consumers shopping for a new home or a new mortgage are hungry for sales data, and that when it comes to home sales prices, Domania fights hard to stay best of breed on the Internet."

Kropper cited the danger of using a competitors' site "because of their flawed reliance on 'price range' search results on individual properties, and 'radius searches' for metropolitan areas. For instance, a price range of $50,000, on a $200,000 property is of little value to a home buyer, home seller or home owner looking to refinance, and may lead them to drastically over or under price a property."

Similarly, 'radius searches' of a metropolitan area that rely on spotty data from a few outlying townships, rather than accurate figures from across the entire metro region, may also mislead prospective buyers and sellers. Imagine trying to buy a home in Manhattan based on a few prices in Yonkers."

Domania's claim doesn't end at coverage—the weekly maintenance is a major part of the battle, including updating a 26 million record database, as well as handling all the challenges of cleaning up data from hand-bound deed books, and correcting multiple spellings of the same streets, avenues and boulevards in the U.S. Domania has a full-time team of six engineers constantly gathering data and cleaning it for public use. Engineers' labors pay dividends, such as a recent data update that grew Domania's California deed records by an impressive 45%.

"We cover 80% of the U.S. population by focusing on the counties where people live, not the counties where cows are herded. Offering sparse coverage of thinly populated rural counties is not central to our corporate mission and adds little to Domanias customers or to the companys bottom line results," said Kropper.
